Cutout Collage

Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) was a French painter and collage artist. He was recovering from a serious sickness when he was 21 and his mother gifted him a paint set. That's when Henri discovered his interest and talent in painting. He knew he had found his gift. He began to pain in a different way towards the end of his life.
He painted paper with beautiful colors and then cut simple shapes from a paper and carefully arranged those shapes over the painting. He created collages like this and called this kind of art as 'cutouts'. Some of his cutouts are big enough to cover a wall while others are small to fit in a page of a book.
Henri's art called Snow Flowers is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. (Reference book: Making Amazing Art by Sandi Henry)

I tried a cutout collage following Henri's method. First I painted a paper with watercolor. Its a free hand painting, follow your mind.

Then I cut out shapes from white paper. No need to draw any shapes on paper. Just hold the paper in one hand and cut with scissors, turning the paper around. Then glue the shapes over the painting in any arrangement you like. You could also overlap the shapes.

Planning to cut letters instead of shapes and glue for making greeting cards.

Hope you liked this post. See you in the next.
